Every Warwick district food hygiene rating since 1 September: 43 businesses rated 5, a Warwick pub 4, a Baginton pub 3 and a Leamington pizza unit rated 2.
The Food Standards Agency published 46 new food hygiene ratings for Warwick district between 1 September and 2 October. Forty-three of them were the top mark of 5. One business, a pizza unit on the Queensway Trading Estate in Leamington, was rated 2, which the scheme describes as “improvement necessary”.
All figures below are taken from the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme register for the Warwick district authority, which covers Leamington, Warwick, Kenilworth, Whitnash and the villages. A rating reflects what inspectors found on the day of the visit, and a business can appeal within 21 days or ask for a re-inspection once it has made changes.
The three that did not get a 5
- Pizza O’More Finest, Unit 9 Queenspark, Queensway Trading Estate, Leamington Spa: rated 2 on 3 September. The register lists it as a retailer rather than a takeaway.
- The Oak, Coventry Road, CV8 3AU, in Baginton, about four miles north of Leamington: rated 3, “generally satisfactory”, on 1 September.
- Rose and Crown, 30 Market Place, Warwick: rated 4, “good”, on 1 September.
The register showed no appeal or re-rating pending against any of the three when we checked on 10 October. A rating of 2 means inspectors found that improvement was needed in at least one of the three areas they score: how hygienically food is handled, the condition of the premises, and how well the business manages food safety on paper. It is not a closure and it does not mean food was unsafe on the day.

What it means for you
- Ratings are on the door, or should be. In England displaying the sticker is voluntary, so a business with a low rating can simply not put it up. The register is the only reliable check, and it is searchable by name or postcode.
- A 5 is not a permanent state. Inspections come round on a risk-based cycle, more often for higher-risk kitchens, so a rating can be several years old. The register gives the inspection date beside every rating.
- If you run a food business and disagree with a rating, the appeal has to go to Warwick District Council’s environmental health team within 21 days of the rating being given. After making improvements you can ask the council for a re-visit and a new rating; the Food Standards Agency explains both routes.
We will publish the next roundup when the register has a fortnight of new ratings. Our directory of local businesses carries the current rating beside each food business it lists.
