Things to do in Leamington Spa: 13 places, 7 of them free

Leamington’s best days out are unusually cheap, because the town’s Regency inheritance is mostly parkland and mostly public. Seven of the thirteen places below cost nothing at all, and two of the paid ones are castles.

Every venue here was checked against its own website or its operator’s website in August 2026. Where a price is quoted, it is the price that venue was listing. Where we could not verify something, we say so rather than guessing.

The free ones in town

Jephson Gardens

The formal Victorian park in the middle of town, laid out along the River Leam behind the Pump Rooms, with flowerbeds, sculpture and a lake. It is open every day from 8am, with closing times varying through the year from 4pm in January and December to 9pm in June and July. There are toilets including accessible toilets and baby change, and the council describes every area as accessible by wheelchair and pushchair.

Inside the park, the Glasshouse holds tropical plants, a goldfish pond and an observation beehive, plus a Studio used for teaching, school visits and art exhibitions. Note that the council’s own page says the Glasshouse is currently unavailable as a venue to book for events and weddings, so if you are planning something rather than just visiting, check first.

Dogs must be on leads, cycling is not allowed, and fishing is permitted only in Mill Gardens. Parking is on Newbold Terrace and Newbold Street, some pay and display and some free, with St Peters and Rosefield Street car parks nearby; our roadworks and parking page lists the current tariffs. Pump Room Gardens

Across the road from Jephson Gardens and easy to miss if you do not know it is there. Originally opened in 1814 as private gardens for spa visitors, it became public in 1876 and is Grade II listed.

A £1.4 million restoration, funded by almost £1 million from the National Heritage Lottery Fund’s Parks for People grant plus contributions from the Friends group and the council, brought back the Victorian Walter McFarlane bandstand and the Linden Arches that light the avenues of lime trees. There is a Victorian-style rain garden, the historic York Bridge across the Leam, Victorian-style seating and toilets, with a café next door in the Royal Pump Rooms building. It won a Green Flag Award in 2025.

Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum

Free, and better than it needs to be. It sits inside the Royal Pump Rooms on the Parade, sharing the building with the town library, the box office, the visitor information centre and Warwick District Council’s customer services.

Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm, closed Mondays except bank holidays. The collection runs to more than 11,000 objects across art, craft, sculpture, local and social history, archaeology and ethnography. Royal Pump Rooms, The Parade, Leamington Spa CV32 4AA.

Foundry Wood

A managed-access community woodland off Princes Drive, run jointly by the Friends of Foundry Wood (registered charity 1157820) and Achieving Results in Communities CIC. It is open most days, free, and runs forest school sessions, heritage walks, craft workshops, wellbeing sessions and regular volunteer days, with events scheduled through September and October 2026. It survives on donations, so put something in the box.

The free ones worth the short drive

Newbold Comyn

A 300 acre (120 hectare) country park on the eastern edge of town, open all day, every day, with free parking. Inside it are the Leam Valley Local Nature Reserve, with wetland, woodland, meadow and riverbank habitats and a bird hide, an observation point with views back across the town, and footpaths running out to Offchurch. There are also cycle trails, football pitches, play areas, a skate park, horse riding routes and a designated model aircraft area, plus Newbold Comyn Leisure Centre.

One practical warning from the council itself: satnav usually sends you down a service road. The correct entrance is from Newbold Terrace East, where the main car park is; there is a smaller one off Radford Road.

Abbey Fields, Kenilworth

A historic valley landscape in the middle of Kenilworth, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, with the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey, veteran trees, a lake and views across the town to the castle. Open all day, every day, with a car park off Bridge Street. Postcode CV8 1BP.

One thing to know: the council’s own Abbey Fields park page still describes the swimming pool as closed for redevelopment. It has reopened. See below.

Hatton Locks

The flight of 21 locks on the Grand Union Canal known as the “stairway to heaven”, climbing away from Warwick. Visiting is free once you have parked, and there is pay and display parking just over the bridge from the Canal and River Trust’s Hatton Locks offices. The Hatton Locks café has toilets. Volunteers at the welcome station explain what the lock keepers are doing. Postcode CV35 7JL.

It is walkable from Warwick Parkway station at the bottom of the flight and Hatton station at the top, which makes it one of the few local days out you can do without a car.

Abbey Fields swimming pool: the new one

Kenilworth’s rebuilt Abbey Fields swimming pool opened to the public on Saturday 11 July 2026, after a redevelopment held up by the discovery of extensive medieval remains on the site.

The new building has a main pool plus an additional family indoor pool with a moveable floor to change the water depth, an outdoor sun terrace, a Changing Places facility with direct hoist access to the pool, two Poolpod lifts for wheelchair users, enlarged family changing rooms and a conservatory-style café that serves park visitors as well as swimmers.

It is run by Everyone Active, at Bridge Street, Kenilworth CV8 1TY, and lists opening hours of Monday to Friday 7am to 9pm and Saturday and Sunday 7am to 5pm. Swimming lessons are enrolling. We could not verify current swim prices from the operator’s site, so check before you go.

The ticketed days out

Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden

The big one, and worth the money. English Heritage’s Kenilworth Castle is open daily 10am to 5pm, last entry 4.30pm. You can see the Norman keep dating from the 1120s, John of Gaunt’s great hall, and the recreated Elizabethan Garden that Robert Dudley built for Elizabeth I’s visit in 1575, complete with Renaissance aviary and fountain.

Prices, booked online in advance:

Booking online the day before saves an adult £3.30, and English Heritage also advertises a 20% discount for visitors arriving by public transport or bicycle. Prices vary by season, so the booking calendar is the authority.

Time-limited warning worth acting on: English Heritage says VAT on family days out has been cut from 20% to 5% until 1 September 2026 and that it is passing on the whole saving. Compton Verney

A Robert Adam mansion in a Capability Brown landscape, about 20 minutes south of Leamington, running as an art gallery with a serious collection and a strong temporary programme. Wednesday to Sunday, grounds 10am to 5pm and galleries 10.30am to 5pm, closed Monday and Tuesday except bank holiday Mondays.

Standard admission is £17.94 pre-booked or £19.54 on the day, or £19.75 and £21.50 respectively if you add the voluntary donation. Under 18s go free, and Universal Credit or Pension Credit holders pay £2.00. Postcode CV35 9HZ.

Stoneleigh Abbey

A Grade I country house near Kenilworth, associated with Jane Austen through her mother’s family. Open Sunday to Thursday, 10am to 5pm, last admission 4pm. It closes for private events on some dates, including Sunday 30 August 2026, so check before setting off. Warwick Castle

Three miles from Leamington and the region’s best-known paid attraction. We could not load warwick-castle.com at all during this check, so we are not quoting opening times or prices for it. Go to the official site for both.

Theatre and live shows

The Loft Theatre is at Victoria Colonnade, Leamington Spa CV31 3AA, at the end of the Colonnade overlooking the River Leam, across from the Pump Rooms. The Loft Theatre Company’s autumn 2026 season runs Middle (23 September to 3 October), a fundraising concert One Enchanted Evening (4 October), Women of Troy (28 October to 7 November) and The Night Alive (2 to 12 December). Nearest car parks are Newbold Terrace, Euston Place, Dormer Place and Bath Place. The company is currently fundraising to re-roof the building and replace its energy systems.

The Royal Spa Centre, on Newbold Terrace, Leamington Spa CV32 4HN, is the larger municipal venue, programming theatre, music, comedy, dance, film, family shows and spoken word, and incorporating the Town Hall. Box office 01926 334418.

What free things are there to do in Leamington Spa?

Seven of the places on this page cost nothing: Jephson Gardens, the Pump Room Gardens, the Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum, Foundry Wood, Newbold Comyn, Abbey Fields in Kenilworth and Hatton Locks. The first three are within a few minutes’ walk of each other on the Parade.

Is Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum free?

Yes. Admission is free. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm, closed Mondays except bank holidays, inside the Royal Pump Rooms on the Parade.

How much is Kenilworth Castle?

£18.70 for an adult booked online in advance with the voluntary donation, or £17.00 without it. On the day it is £22.00. A family ticket for two adults and up to three children is £46.75 booked ahead. English Heritage members go free.

Has Abbey Fields swimming pool reopened?

Yes, it reopened on Saturday 11 July 2026 after redevelopment. It is run by Everyone Active on Bridge Street, Kenilworth, and lists hours of 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 5pm at weekends. Warwick District Council’s own Abbey Fields park page has not been updated and still describes it as closed.

What is there to do in Leamington when it rains?

The Art Gallery and Museum and the Glasshouse in Jephson Gardens are both indoors and free. Compton Verney’s galleries, Kenilworth Castle’s exhibitions, the rebuilt Abbey Fields pool, the Loft Theatre and the Royal Spa Centre all work in bad weather.

What can you do in Leamington without a car?

Jephson Gardens, the Pump Room Gardens, the Art Gallery and Museum, the Loft Theatre and the Royal Spa Centre are all central. Newbold Comyn is walkable from the town centre. Hatton Locks is walkable from Warwick Parkway station, which is on the same Chiltern line as Leamington Spa station.
