Golf Lane in Whitnash shuts on weekdays from 7 to 13 October and the Mill Bridge path to 9 October. Cubbington Road in Leamington follows on 14 October.

Golf Lane in Whitnash closes on weekdays from Wednesday 7 to Tuesday 13 October for traffic calming. It is the closure most likely to change a Leamington journey this week.

Updated 5 October: Castle Green in Kenilworth is due to reopen after today, and the council’s newest orders, published on 25 September, add Cubbington Road and Bedford Street in Leamington for the week of 12 October.

Warwickshire County Council advertised all of these on 18 September. The Budbrooke order has since been made, so it is a decision rather than an intention.

Golf Lane is the one to plan around. The second phase cuts the Box Close to Fieldgate Lane link that Whitnash drivers use to reach Tachbrook Road.

The Fosse Way job is nights only. The council is also imposing a temporary 40mph limit from the Long Itchington Road junction to the existing 40mph limit at the Princethorpe village nameplate, in both directions, while the road is open during the day.

Budbrooke, about two miles west of Warwick, has the longest diversion on the list. The order the council made on 25 September sends traffic via Hampton Road, Henley Road, Gannaway Road, Station Road, Shrewley Common, Hockley Road, Birmingham Road, Hatton Hill, Brownley Green Lane, Ugly Bridge Road, Woodway Lane and Old Budbrooke Road. The contractor is Severn Trent Water, on 0800 783 4444.

Castle Green, the lane in front of Kenilworth Castle, had completion anticipated on 5 October after scaffolding went up for building repairs. Everything else we listed last week has ended: Bridge End in Warwick, Watery Lane at Sherbourne, Tisdale Rise and Fieldgate Lane in Kenilworth, and the Mill End night closure on 3 to 4 October.

Cubbington Road is closed from Lime Avenue to Crown Way, in Lillington. The signed diversion is long, because it runs out through Cubbington and back via Ryton-on-Dunsmore and Leicester Lane. Most local drivers will simply use Lillington Road or Rugby Road.

Welsh Road is the long one. It closes only at the bridge over the River Leam, between School Hill in Offchurch and Cross Lane in Cubbington, but for five weeks. Offchurch is about three miles east of Leamington.

Further out, the council’s 1 October notice proposes closing Gaydon Road at Gaydon, from Pimple Lane to Long Lane, from 19 to 26 October to replace a bridge expansion joint. Gaydon is about eight miles south of Leamington, next to M40 junction 12.

Trains: strike on two Saturdays, and an early start on Wednesday

The RMT union has called 24-hour strikes at Chiltern Railways on Saturday 10 and Saturday 17 October. The dispute is over driver-only operation on the planned East West Rail services between Oxford and Milton Keynes.

Chiltern says more than 93% of its trains will run as usual on both days. For Leamington, two things change:

  • no Chiltern trains run between Stratford-upon-Avon and Leamington Spa on either day
  • the 6.44am Stourbridge Junction to Marylebone starts at Banbury instead, and the 7.32pm Marylebone to Stourbridge Junction ends at Banbury, so neither runs through Leamington

Two more long-distance trains are cut short at Birmingham Moor Street: the 8.19am from Stourbridge Junction and the 6.02pm from Marylebone. We have written up what the strike means for Leamington passengers.

Separately, National Rail lists no early morning trains between West Ruislip and Marylebone before 6.30am on Wednesday 7 October, with tickets accepted on the Underground. The first weekday train from Leamington normally reaches Marylebone at 7.10am, after that window, but check the earliest trains on the morning.

We read National Rail’s planned works list for every start date to the end of October. Apart from those, nothing names Leamington, Warwick, Banbury or Moor Street. The Birmingham New Street to Coventry entries on 6, 13, 20 and 27 October are overnight CrossCountry and West Midlands jobs, not the Chiltern line.

Two new permanent 20mph limits, three weeks apart

Warwickshire County Council has made a 20mph order covering Bridge End, Warwick, and the streets running off it. It commenced on 21 September 2026 and is permanent, not temporary. The schedule names:

  • the entire length of Bridge End, from its junctions with Banbury Road
  • the entire length of Brooke Close, from its junction with Bridge End
  • the entire length of Archery Fields, from its junction with Bridge End
  • the entire length of The Templars, from its junction with Bridge End

That follows the permanent 20mph limit that came into force on 1 September on 22 residential streets in south Leamington, off Europa Way and Gallows Hill, including Admiral Way, Chesterton Drive, Emperor Boulevard, Hastang Fields, Horsepool Hollow, Pebble Island Way, St Fremund Way and Withy Bank.

Anyone who wants to challenge the Bridge End order has six weeks from the date it was made to apply to the High Court. The made order, a plan of the lengths of road affected and the council’s statement of reasons can be inspected at the Main Reception at Shire Hall in Warwick.

On the A452 Kenilworth Road in Leamington, a temporary 30mph limit applies between the Sandy Lane junction at Blackdown and Gables House. It began on 1 September 2026 and is advertised to run to 1 May 2027, while Balfour Beatty builds a new footway.

A new pedestrian crossing on the Kenilworth to Leamington road

Warwickshire County Council gave notice on 18 September that it intends to build a puffin crossing on the A452 Leamington Road in Kenilworth, next to Thomas Bates Road. The council says it is to serve pedestrians from the Kenilworth Gate development of 98 homes, approved by Warwick District Council under application W/20/2020.

Objections and representations have to be in writing, have to say what they are based on, and have to reach the council’s engineering design team by 14 October 2026. The plan can be seen at Warwickshire Direct in Shire Hall, Market Place, Warwick, and on the council’s traffic signals page.

This is the second crossing proposal on the record in a month. A toucan crossing at Gallows Hill, near Warwick Technology Park, was advertised on 4 September.

The M40 and the A46 this week

National Highways’ closure report, last updated on Friday 2 October and running to Thursday 8 October, has nothing on the M40 between junctions 12 and 16 from Monday onwards. The junction 15 and 14 slip closures it listed ended on the night of Friday 2 October, as did a night closure of the A46 southbound exit slip at Warwick.

The work this week is at the Coventry end of the A46:

  • A46 northbound, Binley junction to M69 junction 2: carriageway closed 8pm to 6am on the nights of Monday 5 to Thursday 8 October, for maintenance
  • Binley junction entry slip roads, both directions: closed the same four nights

National Highways gives the diversion only as “via National Highways network”. The A46 south of Coventry, through Stoneleigh, Kenilworth and Warwick, has no closures listed.

The report is refreshed on weekday afternoons, so anything from Friday 9 October onwards has not been advertised yet.

Coming up: match days at Coventry

Warwickshire County Council has made a temporary traffic order closing the A444 Jimmy Hill Way at Coventry, at the junction with M6 junction 3, on event days at the Coventry Building Society Arena. The arena is about 12 miles north of Leamington, and the A46 and M6 are the usual route to it.

The remaining dates this year are 10, 24 and 31 October, 21 November, and 2, 12, 26 and 30 December 2026, with further dates into 2027. The council says the restrictions will only be used when crowds actually need them, and that dates can move if a match is rescheduled.

The resurfacing already booked for your street

Warwickshire County Council publishes a forward programme for Warwick district, and it is the only place local dates are given months ahead. The council warns that the dates are indications and can move.

Carriageway resurfacing still to come:

Four schemes are marked completed: Lillington Road, Woodcote Road in Leamington, Cape Road in Warwick and Rising Lane at Baddesley Clinton.

Every footway scheme on the district’s current list is already finished, including Arlington Avenue, North Villiers Street and Langdale Close in Leamington, Landor Road in Whitnash, and Moseley Road and Highland Road in Kenilworth.

Warwickshire County Council publishes an interactive map of current and planned works at warwickshire.gov.uk/roadworksmap. Zoom into the area you need rather than searching, and use the envelope icon on the map to set up email alerts for forthcoming disruption near you. The council splits its listings into imminent roadworks by district and future works, which covers carriageway resurfacing, footway resurfacing and structural patching.

For the motorway and trunk network, the M40 and the A46 are National Highways roads, not county roads, so they are not the council’s to publish. Check National Highways for those.

Separately, HS2 Ltd can close public rights of way across Warwickshire to allow construction, and those closures are published by HS2 rather than the county council.

The routes that matter

Leamington has no ring road and no motorway of its own. Almost everything funnels through six corridors, and knowing which one is affected tells you immediately whether your journey is in trouble.

The A452 north-west towards Kenilworth is the pressure point. It carries commuter traffic to Coventry and the University of Warwick, it feeds the A46, and it is simultaneously the route of the county’s K2L cycle scheme. It is also the corridor now carrying the 30mph footway limit. If one corridor is going to spoil your morning, it is this one.

The A452 south through Europa Way is the M40 link, reaching junctions 13 and 14. Both are partial junctions with restricted movements rather than full interchanges, which is why traffic for the south often runs on to junction 15 at Longbridge island, where the A46 and A429 meet.

A46 Stoneleigh Junction: the long one

Warwickshire County Council is rebuilding the A46 Stoneleigh Junction, north of Leamington on the road towards Coventry, replacing it with a new signalised gyratory. The £38 million scheme is being built by Colas-Siac Limited. It includes a new bridge over Finham Brook, which is already open, realigned Dalehouse Lane and Stoneleigh Road, new slip roads onto the A46, and eight wingwalls between 7.7 and 9.5 metres tall holding up the bridge and its embankments.

Site preparation finished in December 2025 and main works recommenced on 12 January 2026. Through 2026 the council ran repeated full closures of the Stoneleigh Road bridge over the A46 to lift structures into place, including dates in May, June and July.

The scheme’s end of September update says the 6N backfill is being laid on both sides of the A46, inside and outside the wingwalls, and will continue until approximately the end of October, depending on the weather. Waterproofing paint and drainage behind the walls go in as the infill rises. After that comes the road box, the first step in building the carriageway that will link the new bridge to the A46. The council also says the recycling of the material stockpile is complete, and that material is being used for landscaping. No further bridge closures were listed when we checked on 5 October.

The important detail for anyone planning around it: the council has not published a completion date. Its own page says an anticipated completion date can only be given once final agreement on the design proposals is reached with National Highways. The delay traces back to backfill material for the new bridge being unavailable, which forced a redesign of the wingwalls. The council also says the delay will increase the scheme’s cost, that those costs are still being negotiated with the contractor, and that the two sides take different views on liability. Treat any completion date you see quoted elsewhere with suspicion, and check the scheme page before relying on the junction for a time-critical trip.

A46 Walsgrave: the next one

Further north, National Highways is grade-separating the A46 Walsgrave junction at Coventry, about 800 metres north of the existing roundabout, with slip roads on both carriageways feeding a dumbbell layout over an overbridge. The Development Consent Order was approved on 4 February 2026.

The scheme page now gives its own dates as late 2026 (TBC) to start and late 2028 (TBC) to finish, at £112.5 million for the Walsgrave junction alone. National Highways puts 57,000 drivers a day on the road.

Early works have already begun to bite. National Highways ran overnight closures of the A46 northbound from 13 to 31 July 2026 and southbound on 3 and 4 August 2026, all 8pm to 6am Monday to Friday, with the speed limit cut to 50mph. The laybys between Walsgrave junction and M6 junction 2 closed on 13 July and will be removed to make way for the new junction. Expect that pattern to resume and intensify once main construction starts.

The upshot for Leamington: the A46 corridor to Coventry will be a construction site at two separate points from late 2026 until at least 2028.

Two schemes changing how you get around town

The K2L cycle route is a five-kilometre dedicated cycle track along the A452 linking Leamington and Kenilworth. The county council allocated £4.75 million to it in November 2019. Section 1a, from Leamington town centre to the northern edge of town, was completed in early 2024 using Active Travel and Getting Building fund grants alongside council money. Design work on the remaining sections continues, and the council says plans will be published once they are deliverable, so there is no firm completion date for the full route.

The Emscote Road corridor scheme targets the A445 between Warwick and Leamington, which the council calls one of the busiest and most important routes between the two towns. The plan is a continuous walking, wheeling and cycling route to replace the current disconnected provision, plus junction and signal upgrades and infrastructure work at Portobello Bridge and Greville Road. The council has not yet published construction dates; updates go out via emscoteroadstc@warwickshire.gov.uk.

Parking: what it costs from April 2026

Warwick District Council raised most of its off-street parking charges under the (Off-Street Parking Places) (Variation No. 1) Order 2026, which came into operation on 1 April 2026. Rises of around 13% were typical, though a few tariffs fell. Adelaide Bridge got cheaper, down from £1.50 to £1.25 an hour while everything around it went up.

The headline figures for a day in Leamington:

  • £3.75 for 11 hours, or £5.10 for 24, at Station Approach, Bath Place, Court Street and Packington Place
  • £8.30 for 10 hours, £12.45 for 24, at St Peters multi-storey
  • £9.10 for 10 hours, £13.65 for 24, at Rosefield Street
  • £2.75 flat, 6pm to 8am, almost everywhere

Covent Garden multi-storey reopened on 1 July 2026, after closing in February 2023. The council took the height of the building down so the lower two levels could come back into use, adding 104 spaces to the 89 on the surface car park below. Two floors remain out of use while the council decides what to do with them.

Leaving the car at home

If your journey is to London, the train is usually the better answer: Leamington Spa has direct services to London Marylebone in about 1 hour 22 minutes, and station parking, season ticket options and platform access are covered on our Leamington train times to London page.

Looking further ahead, the draft South Warwickshire Local Plan identifies an area of search for a park and ride north of Leamington, with land potentially safeguarded within the proposed Blackdown housing allocation. It is a proposal in a plan that has not yet been examined, not a scheme with a start date.

Which M40 junction is Leamington Spa?

Junction 13 is the one signed for Leamington Spa and Warwick, reached via the A452 Europa Way, with junction 14 also giving A452 access. Both are partial junctions with restricted movements, so traffic heading south often uses junction 15 at Longbridge island instead.

Is the Kenilworth to Leamington cycle route finished?
