Leamington sits at the meeting point of two road networks that are both being rebuilt at once. Warwickshire County Council is midway through a major reconstruction of the A46 Stoneleigh Junction to the north, and National Highways has just won consent to grade-separate the A46 at Walsgrave beyond it. In town, the largest car park has been shut since 2023 and prices at every other one went up on 1 April 2026.

Where to check live roadworks
Warwickshire County Council publishes an interactive map of current and planned works at warwickshire.gov.uk/roadworksmap. Zoom into the area you need rather than searching, and use the envelope icon on the map to set up email alerts for forthcoming disruption near you. The council splits its listings into imminent roadworks by district and future works, which covers carriageway resurfacing, footway resurfacing and structural patching.
For the motorway and trunk network, the M40 and the A46 are National Highways roads, not county roads, so they are not the council’s to publish. Check National Highways for those.
Separately, HS2 Ltd can close public rights of way across Warwickshire to allow construction, and those closures are published by HS2 rather than the county council.
The routes that matter
Leamington has no ring road and no motorway of its own. Almost everything funnels through six corridors, and knowing which one is affected tells you immediately whether your journey is in trouble.
The A452 north-west towards Kenilworth is the pressure point. It carries commuter traffic to Coventry and the University of Warwick, it feeds the A46, and it is simultaneously the route of the county’s K2L cycle scheme. If one corridor is going to spoil your morning, it is this one.
The A452 south through Europa Way is the M40 link, reaching junctions 13 and 14. Both are partial junctions with restricted movements rather than full interchanges, which is why traffic for the south often runs on to junction 15 at Longbridge island, where the A46 and A429 meet.
A46 Stoneleigh Junction: the long one
Warwickshire County Council is rebuilding the A46 Stoneleigh Junction, north of Leamington on the road towards Coventry, replacing it with a new roundabout layout. The scheme includes a new bridge over Finham Brook, which is already open, realigned Dalehouse Lane and Stoneleigh Road, new slip roads onto the A46, and eight wingwalls between 7.7 and 9.5 metres tall holding up the bridge and its embankments.
Site preparation finished in December 2025 and main works recommenced on 12 January 2026. Through 2026 the council has run repeated full closures of the Stoneleigh Road bridge over the A46 to lift structures into place, including dates in May, June and July.
The important detail for anyone planning around it: the council has not yet published a completion date. Its own project page says an anticipated completion date can only be given once final agreement on the design proposals is reached with National Highways, and it acknowledges that delays will affect scheme costs, which remain subject to negotiation with the contractor. Treat any date you see quoted elsewhere with suspicion, and check the scheme page before relying on the junction for a time-critical trip.
A46 Walsgrave: the next one
Further north, National Highways is grade-separating the A46 Walsgrave junction, about 800 metres north of the existing roundabout, with slip roads on both carriageways feeding a dumbbell layout over an overbridge. The Development Consent Order was approved on 4 February 2026. Construction is expected to start in autumn 2026, and the £112.5 million scheme is due to open to traffic in 2028.
Early works have already begun to bite. National Highways ran overnight closures of the A46 northbound from 13 to 31 July 2026 and southbound on 3 and 4 August 2026, all from 20:00 to 06:00 Monday to Friday, with the speed limit cut to 50mph. Expect that pattern to resume and intensify once main construction starts.
The upshot for Leamington: the A46 corridor to Coventry will be a construction site at two separate points from autumn 2026 until at least 2028.
Two schemes changing how you get around town
The K2L cycle route is a five-kilometre dedicated cycle track along the A452 linking Leamington and Kenilworth. The county council allocated £4.75 million to it in November 2019. Section 1a, from Leamington town centre to the northern edge of town, was completed in early 2024 using Active Travel and Getting Building fund grants alongside council money. Design work on the remaining sections continues, and the council says plans will be published once they are deliverable, so there is no firm completion date for the full route.
The Emscote Road corridor scheme targets the A445 between Warwick and Leamington, which the council calls one of the busiest and most important routes between the two towns. The plan is a continuous walking, wheeling and cycling route to replace the current disconnected provision, plus junction and signal upgrades and infrastructure work at Portobello Bridge and Greville Road. The council has not yet published construction dates; updates go out via emscoteroadstc@warwickshire.gov.uk.
Parking: what it costs from April 2026
Warwick District Council raised most of its off-street parking charges under the (Off-Street Parking Places) (Variation No. 1) Order 2026, which came into operation on 1 April 2026. Rises of around 13% were typical, though a few tariffs fell.

Two things stand out. Adelaide Bridge got cheaper, down from £1.50 to £1.25 an hour while everything around it went up, making it the value option for a short stop near the town centre. And for a full day, Station Approach and the Bath Place group at £5.10 for 24 hours are less than half the £12.00 to £13.65 charged at Adelaide Bridge and Rosefield Street.
Annual season tickets are available at the larger car parks: £958 at St Peters multi-storey and £783 at Rosefield Street, or £111 a month at either.
Covent Garden multi-storey: still shut
The Covent Garden multi-storey has been closed since February 2023 because of what the council describes as unresolvable structural issues and increasing incidents of anti-social behaviour. It has not simply been mothballed: the council is reducing the building’s height so the lower two levels can reopen for long-stay parking for the next two to three years while a long-term plan for the site is settled. Once complete, those lower levels are expected to hold more than 100 vehicles.
In the meantime the council points drivers to eleven alternatives, the largest being Royal Priors multi-storey (440 spaces), St Peters multi-storey (383 spaces), Chandos Street (151 spaces) and Bedford Street (49 spaces).
Leaving the car at home

Looking further ahead, the draft South Warwickshire Local Plan identifies an area of search for a park and ride north of Leamington, with land potentially safeguarded within the proposed Blackdown housing allocation. It is a proposal in a plan that has not yet been examined, not a scheme with a start date.
